How Dark is Too Dark?

I believe (tho am not sure) that urban fantasy is considered very dark. Some paranormals, too. This is neither urban fantasy nor paranormal, but an historical. So my question is: How dark is too dark?

Where's the line? What's considred too much?

On the other hand, what do you want to see? How deeply do you want the angst to run? How horrible do you want the world to be?

I say that as long as you're able to create equal payoff to balance the darkness, go as dark as the story needs to go. As long as the entire story isn't one angst or catastrophe after another, heavy darkness makes for a great contrast against that HEA light at the end.

hmm, good point, Lisa! You do have to balance dark and lightness, all that angst with something else. Thanks.

I think as long as you're not gratuitously dark, its fine.
