Synopsis-ugh

Last week (or possibly early this week I forget) I was on Twitter (not so shocking) and saw a post on what a editor looks for in a synopsis. I usually click on these, just to see if there's anything I don't already know about the whole tedious process.

In fact, I made a t-shirt that says it all.

But here are three sites that offer good advice on how to get through it without A. Drinking (or drinking too much; drinking is perfectly acceptable) B. Developing a headache the size of Alaska, or C. Chucking the whole thing and ignoring that rather important part of the submission process.

All things being equal, reading this would automatically help in writing the synopsis to the absolutete best of your ability and it would be a perfect and polished masterpiece.

I'll stop laughing now.

But it'll help get those specific points in and help them come across in a better way to catch that certain some one's eye.

It's a never eding cycle of plot, write, and the self-edit.

But I love it, despite the suspicious keyboard marks on my forehead. Not so attractive but I don't seem to leave this computer so no one really notices them anyway.

Seriously, how do you take a 70,000 word story and condense it into a 500 word overview? How do you take the next 3 books and show enough of them to entice without adding another 1500+ words to the synopsis?

Monday Musings: Exhaustion

Spent the weekend writing, writing, writing. Managed 6 chapters and half the synopsis. (Also did laundry, exercised, vacuumed, went to Michael's because I had a 50% off coupon that expired Saturday, and watched Amazing Wedding Cakes.)

Probably could have done the whole synopsis if I didn't want TV but the brain needed rest.

Desperately.

Picking up my puppy today! I'm really excited and can't wait. So no writing tonight, but tomorrow I'm reading over all 12 completed chapters, finishing the synopsis, and Wednesday morning sending it out.

Why, you ask, am I not finishing the whole thing? Because this editor knows it's not done, and has asked for a partial anyway. I love this editor. :) So she'll get 24K of 95K words and a lovely synopsis and then I'll sit and wait while she reads it.

Yes, and finish the story. Must finish this story...and the Egyptian Contemporary one. And the other one...what was that? I had another story half finished that got shoved to the side because of these. Man, my brain is fried.

I forget what week I'm in...4?

But I know my goals for the week! And isn't that all that counts?

• Edit Germany story (and possibly title it)
• Stare at synopsis file (currently blank) and create a wonderful synopsis to wow and amaze potential editors/agents
• Stop fooling myself and hope for the best when it comes to the synopsis
• Research contests and enter at least 2
• Edit Birthrite - Raven as it's been ages since I last looked at it and think I could change and tweak things to better suit the overall story.

Til the End...No not too sure about that, either.

But in a true break from my usual writing style, I've completed the synopsis rather than the story first. Since it's a short one, I thought I needed that structure and guide. And am totally amazed that I managed to do that, first. But I really like the synopsis, and plan on taking the rest of today to finish the story.
