Saturday Excerpt

Every Saturday at Slip into Something Victorian we're posting excerpts from our books. Yes, they're mostly Victorian (1837-1901) America, England, wherever, but since we don't always stick to one time frame, there will be others, as well.

Today I'm over there with an excerpt from Dark Desires of the Druids: Murder & Magick. I hope you enjoy!

What kind of contest would you like?

Now that all 4 of my Druids books are out I'm thinking of having a contest. My question to you is, What kind? There are a lot out there: scavenger hunts, leave a comment on a blog, those kinds of things. I want something different...but what? Fix the collapsible panels on my website, win a book doesn't sound too intriguing! (Though I'd be grateful, they're driving me bonkers!)

Rules: Must pertain to me, my Druids books, and have a realistic prize. The person whose contest I pick will receive their choice of either a Victorian purse or a box of Godiva chocolates. Their choice. The contest runs from June 26, 2009-July 10, 2009.

Ideas? Leave a comment on my blog, twitter me @Ladyisabel, or email me!

The Tryst

Yup, still talking about my free short story, Dark Desire of the Druids: The Tryst. Why? Cause, it's free! But I'll talk a little about the overall universe.

It's still Victorian London/Philadelphia as we know it. Nothing there has changed. However, there is one very significant difference: Magickers exist and Witch Hunters are hunting them.

In Murder & Magick, Raven and Malcolm must deal with the fanatical Sir John Corwin, baronet, who's out to expose Raven and kill them both.Hunters are on the rise in England, seeking out any who display even a modicum of magick and arbitrarily murdering them. (Book trailer)

In Sex & Subterfuge, Morgana and Lucien are forced to confront reality: Bringing magickers into the open would only cause war between those with magicks and those without. In Philadelphia, things haven't reached the fevered pitch Corwin has stirred up in England. Yet. They have other problems there, not the least of which are magickers after power for themselves. Magickers who believe they're superior and should rule those with no magick.

Blurb:
From the moment he sees her, Malcolm Wargrave, Earl of Preston wanted Raven Drake. On a secluded estate in England, he sets out to seduce the very willing miss. Though she returns his passion, she belongs to another. Will this stop their rendezvous?

Raven Drake knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. In this case, after him. Though she's a virgin, she sees this time with Malcolm as her one chance to experience unbridled passion. And she intends to take it.

But will their tryst be enough for either of them? Or will they be caught in a web of their own making, drowning in desire? In this exciting prequel to The Dark Desires of the Druids: Murder & Magick, Isabel Roman explores the passion of giving into one's deepest desires.

MySpace

I'm now on MySpace! Literally, since Wednesday I mean. I have all of 3 friends so don't judge me by that. I had a co-worker manipulate the background with my first cover. It's a little dark, you can't see everything I want, but I'm working on that. I prefer Facebook - clean lines and no background nonsense, it's just easier. So I'm on both, and feel free to friend me on both!

Slip into Something Victorian

I'm blogging over at Slip into Something Victorian today. Drop on by, leave a comment.

BTW: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was good. Not great, not fantastic, but really good. You were certainly never bored and Michael Sheen is such a wonderful actor it's a shame he hasn't won recognition for it yet.

Happy Thanksgiving

The history of Thanksgiving is an interesting one. And I'm not just talking about the Pilgrims coming over. I'm talking Lincoln and reminding a nation at war the meaning of that nation.

Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent magazine editor, wrote a letter to Lincoln on 28, 1863, urging him to have the "day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union Festival." She wrote, "You may have observed that, for some years past, there has been an increasing interest felt in our land to have the Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the States; it now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution." The document below sets apart the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise."

The original proclamation, written by William Seward (also know for the purchase of Alaska), was sold to benefit Union Troops:

According to an April 1, 1864, letter from John Nicolay, one of President
Lincoln's secretaries, this document was written by Secretary of State William
Seward, and the original was in his handwriting. On October 3, 1863, fellow
Cabinet member Gideon Welles recorded in his diary that he complimented Seward
on his work. A year later the manuscript was sold to benefit Union troops.

So tomorrow, as we gorge ourselves on turkey and football, remember our past, our troops, and our hope for the future of our great nation.
