Interview with Stephanie Burkhart for Sunrise Over Brasov

Stephanie Burkhart is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD.  She was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire.  After serving 11 years in the US Army she currently calls Castaic, California her home. Stephanie was married in Denmark in 1991 and has two young sons. She adores chocolate, is addicted to coffee and enjoys early morning walks.  She's also an assistant den leader for her son's Cub Scout den and is a Boy Scout mom. She writes paranormal, contemporary, and steampunk romance and has two children's books published with 4RV Publishing.

Question: At any given time do you work on only one story at a time and maybe plot out the next one or are there many ideas racing around in your head?

Steph: I used to be able to write two stories at a time, but those days are gone.  I have a ton of ideas in my head. I usually write out the plots in my notebooks so I can go back to the idea when time affords. I generally write one story at a time now, due to time constraints. My boys are older and involved in outside/real life activities as am I. It's a tad frustrating because I want to get it all out now.

Question: Is there a genre you haven't written in, but would like to? Or wish you could write in?

Steph: I wish I could write a sweeping historical that takes place in the 1600-1700's, but sadly, I don't have much of a historical voice. I've written paranormals and steampunks that take place in the 1800's, but I wouldn't want to go any further back. I love reading historicals though.

Question: Do you add an element of romantic suspense to your stories?

Steph: I try to. What I like about romantic suspense are the nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat moments because a character's true nature is usually brought out then. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite spices. It sits on the shelf next to my Lowry's garlic salt with parsley. J

Question: Say you have unlimited funds. What kind of writing office/cottage would you create for yourself?

Steph: I'd like to have a place next to water; a river, a lake, or the ocean. I love being near water. It's refreshing. Its nature at it's purest. Flowers and trees grow near water. It attracts wild life and birds. Quiet, natural scenes such as the ones being near water inspires, usually keeps the creative juices flowing.

Question: If you could turn your novel into a TV show, which novel or series would you do? What network?

Steph: I would love to turn the Moldavian Moon series into a show. There's a lot of implied dark romance in the setting next to the Black Sea in the 1800's. There's a lot of suspenseful elements, too. It's a period piece so I would lean toward the premium channels to produce it like HBO and Showtime.

Question: Tell us about your latest release.

Steph: In "Sunrise Over Brasov," Rosa has been kidnapped by Clement, an evil werewolf. He knows she's a virgin witch capable of powerful white magic. Michael, Rosa's beloved, sets out to rescue her, but soon discovers things aren't as they seem. They make it to the vampire fortress, Rasnov, where they have to make a stand. Can Michael win over Rosa's heart again?

He raised his hand and lowered his hood. An inherent strength filled his profile. Confidence. Concern. Relief.

Rosa's breath jammed in her throat. He looked familiar. He smelled familiar.

"Rosa, it's Michael. Let's go."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

A frown set against his rugged features. "I don't have time to argue -- now put on a warm dress and cloak."

"No." She was not going anywhere with him despite the relief in his voice.

He sighed and shut the door. Moving with fluid grace, he crossed the room, jerked the door to her closet open and threw the items he wanted her to wear on her bed. "Get. Dressed."

"No." She was determined not to budge, despite the danger outside.

"Rosa, we're leaving."

"I'm staying."

"Why would you want to stay? Clement kidnapped you."

Disconcerted, she pointedly glanced away from his hard stare. What did he mean by kidnapped? Clement didn't keep her behind bars and feed her only bread and water. Rosa could even go into Brasov to shop as long as Lucien or one of the bodyguards went with her.

"I'm going to take you back to your mother."

Her head snapped toward his direction. Mother? Of course she had a mother -- a family, even -- only she had no recollection of them. So why did her body fill with warmth at the mention of her mother by a man she hadn't seen before, but was hauntingly familiar? She pursed her lips, torn by conflicting emotions.

"Caroline and Darius can't keep this up. Now get dressed or I'll dress you myself."

"You'll find me an unwilling subject."

He drew in a deep breath and raked a hand through his thick ebony hair. "You are exasperating."

"So I've been told."
