Inspired by a true story, The Soul Retrieval is a suspenseful tale of love, loss and healing
which follows traumatized southern beauty Henrietta Clayborn as she moves between her
home in a small South Carolina town and the New Mexico Native American reservation whose spontaneous healings keep drawing her physician husband back. Tortured by her awful secrets, Henrietta struggles to thrive in either locale, but it is her unlikely friendship with Joe Loco––an eccentric Native American mystic with an Elvis fetish and a gift for healing––that shows her the way to be whole again.

Set in the late 1950s, The Soul Retrieval is richly woven with spiritual insights but also deadly secrets, forbidden healings, a murder mystery, stunning scenery and an unforgettable cast of characters.

A story of transcendent and inspiring power that is both entertaining and enlightening, readers will be cheering for the uptight woman from South Carolina to push through her fears of the forbidden as she searches for truth and healing, faces great obstacles on the frontier of self and
ultimately becomes more than she ever thought possible.

After finishing the second nocturne, he looked up at her. “You know that I’ve been researching the high incidence of spontaneous healings here, right?” Jeff was both a lead physician and medical researcher at the Medichero Indian Hospital. He reached for a pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his short-sleeved white shirt.

“Uh-huh,” Henrietta said. She barely heard what he said. How am I going to get into it? How am I going to tell him? She had asked herself these questions at least a million times. She picked up a pen and notebook from the coffee table, trying to keep her hands busy.

Jeff smoked in silence a moment before continuing. “There’s more to it than even I  imagined.”

“More to what?” she asked. She absently doodled on the page without looking up. How am I
going to tell him?

Jeff blew smoke. “The spontaneous healings that I’m so interested in ... the medicine men here seem to be doing something real to affect the recoveries.”

Now he had her attention. “They are?” She looked at him. “Like what?”

Instead of answering, Jeff got up and turned toward the bay windows that cradled the piano in a small alcove off the living room of the doctor’s cottage. His silhouette against the bright morning light was a man-shaped eclipse, his muscled edges luminous and blurred by the smoldering tobacco. It gave him an unworldly appearance, and Henrietta was reminded about how often she felt like an outsider here, and even back home.

#NewRelease: Key to Lawrence by Gary and Linda Cargill

The Cargills docked at Southampton and explored the South of England in preparation for this thriller, Key to Lawrence. They also sailed the North Atlantic just like Dora Benley. But their transatlantic voyages were on the Queen Mary 2 instead of the Lusitania. They made use of the American Southwest where they live to depict the Syrian Desert that was home to Lawrence of Arabia. Visit their website. Read their blog. Linda also has a Facebook Fan Page.

Water rushed into the four, great smoke stacks of the ship as they, too, hit the waves. Tremendous, churning whirlpools sucked victims inside. A few were ejected, blackened with soot. Propellers rose above the maelstrom. The rudder lifted higher than the smoke stacks. The ship's prow pointed down toward the deep. It looked as if the ship's nose would hit the sea bed hundreds of feet below. The Lusitania sank in only 18 minutes after being torpedoed on May 7, 1915. Dora Benley vowed revenge on the enemy. Key to Lawrence tracks the beginning of her quest for justice in this special edition of the first volume of the Edward Ware Thriller Series. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

Manhattan — Saturday, May 1, 1915

The stranger stared at Dora’s package. A wide-brimmed hat shaded his face, revealing only a dark beard and mustache. Smoking a small, cheap, stubby cigar, dressed in a nondescript, ill-fitting dark suit, the man strutted towards her in a menacing fashion. Blueish-white cigar smoke curled upward in a lazy corkscrew. It vanished into the air several yards above his head.

Twenty-year-old Dora Benley quickly stuffed the surprise birthday gift for her father into her satchel. Holding a green parasol edged with black fringe over her head she skirted crowds of well-dressed, gossiping passengers waiting to board the Lusitania. Dressed in a full-length, aquamarine dress with white lace around the sleeves, Dora moved as far away from the intruder as she could without falling off the edge of the pier.

She searched impatiently for her parents. They were supposed to rendezvous with her at 11:00 AM. By now it was almost noon!

A man and woman reporting team burst upon the crowd at Cunard’s Pier 54. They were trailed by a photographer and his assistants carrying a large folding camera and a tripod. The reporters hurled themselves at the passengers.

“What do you think of the German announcement?” The male reporter thrust a copy of The New York Times at Dora. He pointed to the advertisement prominently displayed on the front page:

This time, the voice was distinctly female and the name she mentioned sounded familiar.

Lilly leaned forward and hung her head over the branch. The couple in question were directly under her. She recognized the woman as being one of her mother’s guests who’d come for the week-long house party—Mrs. White, a young widow. And Mr. Colton …

Of course, how could she forget? Her brother, Thomas, had brought a few of his friends to participate in the week’s activities, one of them being the rakish Mr. Colton. She’d overheard some of the women gossiping about him before he’d arrived, and when she was introduced …

Well, it was easy to see what all the fuss had been about. He was devastatingly handsome—tall, with an athletic build and shaggy blond hair. And by the way he carried himself, Mr. Colton was well aware of the effect his appearance had on others. Even his clothing was impossibly perfect—not a single crease, spot, or wrinkle marred the fashionable man. She hadn’t seen him since their introduction, so naturally she’d just assumed he was making himself busy with exploration and the like.

And it looked as if her assumption had been correct.

Mr. Colton appeared to be quite busy with his thorough exploration of the ginger-haired woman he was currently groping.

He laughed. “You have no idea how wicked I can be, my peach.”

Lilly grimaced at the use of such a ridiculous term of endearment. Did he really believe women responded positively to being referred to as pieces of fruit? And of all the produce in which to be compared, he had the audacity to choose that one. Peaches were plump, round, squishy, and furry all over. Really, the sentiment made for a much better insult than a compliment.

Despite that, the woman giggled and pawed at his chest. Mr. Colton took the woman into his arms and began kissing her neck, then moved lower.

Lilly jolted back up.

She knew she should have made her presence known and left the two lovers alone to do whatever it was they were doing. It simply wasn’t acceptable for a young lady, any lady really, to be privy to such personal and completely inappropriate conversation … and everything else she was witnessing.

Yet she remained ever so quiet, perched atop the branch, thinking about what it was she was supposed to be doing.

Then she leaned over again to get a better look.

Jessica will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour!
