J. Morgan, paranormal romance, and Immortally Damned

My name is J. Morgan, and I'm addicted to fiction. Whew, I feel much better getting that off my shoulders. After nearly forty years of reading, my house looks like a librarian/book hoarder has taken up residence. (Hey! I am a librarian and I rarely buy books for me…I use my public library *G*) Sad thing is it's true. I love reading. I guess it should come as no surprise that somewhere along the way, I decided to become a writer.

It didn't take long for me to figure out that writing is a lot harder than I thought it would be. My latest book more than proved the fact to me loud and clear. Immortally Damned is a five year odyssey. It began when I finished the first book in the series, Immortally Yours. You have to understand that I'm a comedian at heart. The rest of my library more than illustrates the fact. Sometimes you just want to try something new. Of course, it wasn't exactly that new. I couldn't leave the paranormal world alone. I just wanted to explore another aspect of it. A darker corner of the world than the one I had already created.

Stepping out of your comfort zone is even harder than sitting in front of a blank screen for the first time. You've found your niche. Your readers are used to the chuckles you give them. What if they don't accept this child you've slaved over, cried while creating and basically pried kicking and screaming from your brain? Let me tell you. It's enough to make you close the lid to your laptop and sit quietly in the corner for the rest of your life.

 So, why do it?

That is the difference between a writer and an author. Some people might not see the distinction, but to me, it's there. A writer writes. An author strives to be better than their last book. If you don't have that drive, you're not an author. That isn't to say a writer doesn't end up eventually becoming an author. I did, so there's hope for just about anyone.

Immortally Damned is in no way the end of my journey. It's just a stepping stone to the next new me. A lot of authors lose this drive. I've seen it. They get in that comfort zone and unintentionally stay there. I'm not saying it won't be me one day, but I hope not. That's why I jumped out of the kiddy pool to write something from the right side of my brain. It could be the left side, but the point is, I.D. isn't the normal me. It's the me I'd like to see more of, to tell you the truth. I'd never fully abandon my comedic side. There's too much room for growth even there, but just like you sometimes want to turn off Big Bang Theory to check in on Gibbs over at NCIS, you should have more one than one aspect to who you are as a discerning individual. Just so you know, I watch for Abby, Gibbs is just a plus.

If you've taken the time to read any of my books, thank you. I mean that. You're the reason, I'm writing. If the voices tell you I do it to shut them up, they're only partially right. I write to make people smile, cry or just plain go awwww. Take your pick. For the most part, I write to make people laugh. Immortally Damned is the opposite of that. It's also something scary. It will hopefully make you think and delve under the surface of who the characters are, to find out who they truly are. Unfortunately, the downside is you might get a glimpse of who I am, so don't dig too deep. My insecurities couldn't handle it.

Authors tend to reveal more of themselves in their work, than they like. It's the nature of the beast, or SpongeBob depending on your target demographic.

So, what is Immortally Damned about? I've talked an awful lot about what I'm about, so I'd better share time with the work behind this inner to outer monologue. At its core, I.D. is a story about redemption. Its main characters have fallen as low as they can go. They've given up on themselves, and see no reason why anyone else should care, when they don't. Caern, a half vampire, has spent the last hundred years trying to make up for some, let's say, pretty nasty habits. Eliza Marrone is a New Orleans police detective tracking down a serial killer stalking nuns. Chance, or perhaps fate, brings these two together and when it does, neither one of them will ever be the same.

When it comes to true love that always seems to be the way. Of course, since I'm the writer that is all my fault. Like, I take that as a bad thing. What is love without a few bumps to make things interesting? Which is the whole point. If it's as interesting for me writing it, that translates into interesting for you the reader. At least, I hope it does. I invite you to read the following excerpt to find out for yourself. Thanks for staying with me through this as I rambled, and as always, happy reading!

Caern swore to never return to New Orleans, his death warrant making the choice easy. Well, easy until his past returns to smack him around. Now, he has to return to the one place where death isn't a possibility, it's a guarantee. And only a matter of time. Searching to find a murderer out to kill the grandchild he never thought to meet, he finds himself falling into a hell he just might not be able to crawl free of. His only hope lies in Detective Eliza Marrone. Falling for her isn't in the cards, but his heart tells him it might be the only thing he can't escape. Zombies, old lovers and psychopathic vampire clergy, yeah those are things he can deal with. True love on the other hand is the one thing he's always avoided. This time there's no way out. It might get him killed, or end up saving his wretched soul.

Excerpt
He stepped up to her and put an arm around her shoulders. "It's okay to react to this. Believe me. I've seen some crap that would make your nose hair run screaming out of your head, and it never gets easy."
As much as it comforted her to have his arms tugging her to his chest, Eliza pushed him away. "Yeah, react but drown it out before it gets in the way of doing the job."
"That's right, but sometimes you have to be human too." He gazed at the murdered nun, his eyes bearing more pain than she thought possible to see. "Being made of steel only makes you a robot. Believe me. In long run, being human is a much better option."
"Are you?" The question slipped out before she knew she had wanted to ask it.
Confusion swirling in his eyes, he looked at her. "Am I what?"
"A robot? Human?" That last word hung in the air between them.
"Mostly." He dropped his head. "That doesn't make me any less a monster."
Perhaps for the first time since this thing started she heard truth come out of his mouth. Eliza found it refreshing. Too bad the truth came with more questions than she'd ever get answers to. Pushing him for those answers now wouldn't get them for her. For now she'd bide her time, and start with the questions that had nothing to do with the ones burning a hole through her brain.
"So, what did you find?"
"This is more than a staged murder for some sick bastard's benefit. It's a ritual." He rolled his mouth into a purse. "One I've seen before. I may not be able to tell you who is doing this, but I know what is doing this."
"Isn't that the same thing?"
"You're not in that world anymore, Detective Marrone. Who? What? They are two distinct things in my, now your, world." He ran a finger over the stained altar cloth. "To educate you, I'll begin with the ritual. Blood is more than a conduit for oxygen and disease. It is truly the water of life. In its purest form, it contains everything a body knows. Memories and life itself. The ritual brings all those out in the taking." He took the platter from the altar and held it out to her. "The blood was drained into this to open a portal to this woman's memories, because she either didn't know or couldn't remember what the killer wanted to know."
"What do you mean wanted to know?" She refused to buy this line of crap.
"That is something I can't divulge. It's above your pay grade." He smirked and put the patter back on the altar where it had been.
"Okay, smartass." Eliza gritted her teeth, wanting nothing more than to slam him across the altar. "If you can't tell me who, or why, tell me what?"
Caern kneaded his jaw, but seemed hesitant to speak.
"Come on, I'm trusting you enough not to turn you in." Eliza banged her hand against his chest. "You've got to give me something. I'm not breaking three laws for my health here. If you want this to be a partnership, it starts here. You're right, I know this case inside and out. Still, I don't know shit. You do. Maybe between the both of us, we can stop this bastard before he has a chance to string up another nun."
When he finally looked at her, his face might as well have been stone. His lips barely moved, but she heard the word nonetheless. "A vampire."
Eliza didn't know what shocked her more. That he said it, or that she believed him.

Interview with Mark Harmon

Sunday, November 6 at 9pm on USA network airs “Certain Prey” staring NCIS lead Mark Harmon. I was given a unique opportunity to participate in a telephone conference interview with the handsome Mr. Harmon and bring to you all today a rundown of what transpired:
John Sanford’s Prey novels feature a male cop protagonist that has been a successful businessman, dresses sharp and chases the ladies without remorse but what Lucas Davenport likes best is being a cop and hunting down the criminal. Mr. Harmon is very respectful of the original material and hopes he has brought to life as accurate a representation of Lucas Davenport as possible.
Mr. Harmon considers the characters of Lucas Davenport and his character on NCIS of Leroy Jethro Gibbs as different as can be both personally and professionally. Davenport has a darker side than Gibbs and while they might get along during the course of a case it is unlikely they’d associate outside of the law enforcement world.
One of the highlights for Mr. Harmon was playing against two very strong – if ‘bad’ females in Certain Prey. These are two ladies people will enjoy with their sharp tongues, quick wit and clever tricks.
As to NCIS: he feels that the work has never become routine and with the camaraderie with the other actors it continues to be a pleasure to work on NCIS. No one on the NCIS set phones in their acting – everyone is present and generous with the work.
I went on to ask a hypothetical question and asked what Gibbs would think if McGee and Abby and Tony and Ziva broke his rule 12 (never date a co-worker). He took a moment to consider the questions and said that these things happen in the work place and as long as they all continued to be as professional at their jobs as they have always been he doesn’t believe it would be a surprise to Gibbs.
Perhaps a glimmer of hope for the ‘shipper’ fans there!

Interview with Mark Harmon

Yes. That Mark Harmon. Currently known as Leroy Jethro Gibbs of NICS and Lucas Davenport of USA's upcoming TV movie based on the book by John Sandford, Certain Prey.

I've read maybe 16 of the current 21 Prey stories and have enjoyed each one. I'll catch up on the newest 5 soon. Honest!

So this interview, which lasted 32 minutes (and I recorded it all!) involved others asking questions, I just filled in for a NCIS buddy who couldn't make it. She was the journalist invitee, but to take her place? I was all over that!

Some of the questions asked were about Certain Prey and some about NCIS, since it is the #1 scripted TV show out there. I'll post some of the answers tomorrow, but don't forget, Certain Prey debutes this Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 9pm on USA.

Guest Gordon A. Kessler

Thanks for hosting me on your blog Sexy Adventures, Passionate Tales, Isabel!

So, I’m to blog about anything I want? Oh, my! So much to say and so little mind to say it with!

*grin* Thanks for joining the party, Gordon! Glad you could make it.

Well, I hope it’s obvious that I love to write. I wrote Jezebel for therapy while going through a divorce—thus the violence and sex seemed appropriate at the time. I’m not really a horror writer. I like writing thrillers, and this one just ended up leaning toward horror.

In all my novels I enjoy using specific types of characters/tools: a romantic connection, a tension-heightening storm, at least one dog or horse, a Native American, a deadline that shortens, and a strong, smart woman. I feel that this combination of ingredients provide for an exciting and surprise-filled, dynamic story.

Jezebel was a blast to write. I love dogs, and this is about a very large dog that gets caught up in a conspiracy and used in a hideous manner. After she kills her master, she’s on the loose, and terrorizing the city. But is she the one who’s really doing all the killing? Meanwhile dogs all over the city are attacking their masters and the person who seems to be at the center of these crazy and heinous attacks is the animal control director, Tony Parker. Tony’s going through a mid-life crisis and has his own problems. His lovely wife feels the tension and see her husband’s attraction to his beautiful, young and seductive assistant.

My dog would rather lick you to death than attack. Unless you're holding out on a treat & teasing her of course...

I love the tension that builds in this story, and planting little clues that makes the reader say, “Oh, yeah! I should have seen that coming” when the plot twists and things get out of hand. I’ve had several readers tell me that they’ve read Jezebel several times, just so they could find those clues and see the story from an enlightened angle each time.  This is a novel that scatters clues throughout, and I challenge anyone to predict the outcome. Jezebel isn’t a who-done-it—that’s obvious within the first few chapters; it’s a what’s-going-to-happen-next thriller.  The suspense is intense throughout—I think it’s a perfect Halloween season read.

After Jezebel, I wrote Dead Reckoning—a real fish out of water, or should I say “in hot water” mystery thriller. A female NCIS agent goes undercover aboard a ship of horrors to find out why crewmembers are disappearing one-by-one. There’s romance, mystery, and murder—what a wonderful combination.  And I challenge anyone to guess who-done-it in this one.

NCIS? I'm so there!

My latest novel is Brainstorm. Once again, there is romance, mystery, big thrills, and high technology. This one gets into remote viewing, and man was it fun to write. I loved writing the mind trips, and paranormal scenes. Still, I tried to ground the story in realism to make it believable in the real world so that I didn’t have to create a whole new one. I know you’ll enjoy this one.

No cheating—don’t read the end of any of my novels first, it will absolutely ruin the story for you. And don’t ever put any of my books away without reading the epilogue. There is always a surprise or two just to top it off. The very best surprise right now is that all three of my thrillers and a couple of short stories are currently on sale as eBooks for only $.99 just to get those numbers up and to reward my readers for their loyalty. You can find them on Amazon, B&N, Kobo, iBooks, Sony—all the major online bookstores, as well as http://www.readersmatrix.com/. Of course you can also get them in hardcover and paperback.

So now I’m working on sequels for all three thrillers. You can find out a little more on my blog and my website. Please check them out. And, you can always email me. Drop me a line!

Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to give my spiel on your blog! Happy reading.

BLURB:
Sleep lightly tonight…

A madman has come to town seeking a diabolical revenge and large dogs begin attacking their masters for no apparent reason and with heinous results.

Animal Control Director Tony Parker must find out why and stop the murderous attacks. Meanwhile, Jezebel, a huge black Great Dane has killed her master and is loose, terrorizing the city and stalking Parker and his family. Parker and Sarah Hill, his beautiful and seductive young assistant, attempt to unravel the mystery and stop the terrible carnage while dealing with their own demons and lusty desires.

The attacks must be stopped. Jezebel must be found-and soon, you see--there is one other complication. Parker seems to have come down with an annoying little virus. No, it's not one of those irritating summer colds. It's certain death.

She's a murderess, huge and black as a hell-bound night.

Beware. Jezebel is on the loose!

EXCERPT:
In the grayish soup, a dark vision appeared.  Floating down the middle of the street, it slowly formed into a recognizable shape.

An animal.  A large black animal.  A huge Great Dane.  It walked with confidence.  Long, thin legs.  Mouth closed, head and eyes fixed straight ahead.  Occasionally, its feet splashed one of the pools.  Light from the streetlights caused a sparkle from underneath its neck with every step of its left forefoot.  A large diamond, set on a gold tag, captured the light and shot it out like a laser.  The dog maintained its pace for what seemed like minutes.

Finally, it stopped.  With its body still pointing down the street, it slowly turned its head to the right and looked up a sidewalk leading to the front door of a house.  It stared, still emotionless, at the door.  At Tony Parker’s door.

October the busiest month

I used to be certain December was, or the 6 weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years but now I'm convinced it's October. Or maybe just this one. Who knows, maybe it'll be October 1-January 1 for all I know (I sincerely hope not!)

2 conference, Disney, birthdays, holidays, AND writing? I'll never survive. Something's got to give and last night it was me.

Migraine, sinus pressure, you name it I had it. I even missed NCIS because of it all.

I'm such a big planner that I thought I had it all down. HA! Apparently I planned a little too much and I think it's catching up with me. I need to slow down, though who knows what'll give. I don't want to give up anything, but maybe I should cut back. On what, I don't know, everything seems to be a priority in my life.

My advice to you: take time for yourself, even if you're sitting on the couch dozing while watching Guys & Dolls...which I'm doing now before work.

Echo in the Bone

I have the latest Diana Gabaldon book, An Echo in the Bone. All 800+ pages of it. Not her longest but certainly up there. No wonder it takes her 3 years to write a book! As I said before, I've read her since the first one, Outlander, was published. I started this already, and am disappointed it has so much of characters I don't care about!

But I won't add in spoilers here, I'll dutifully finish it (probably by tomorrow night lol) and then judge.

Alas, I'll have to take a break from reading for my 2 hours worth of NCIS. I'm so pathetically excited about the premier, it's sad. So one hour for NCIS then the series premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles. I'm not as excited about that, but will give it a chance. I enjoyed the 2 shows (Legend I and II) set during the NCIS season 6, but found the characters bleh.

I didn't care about any of them but Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J. Cause, well, LL Cool J is just sexy and at least Chris O'Donnell can act! And there you have it. I hated the psychiatrist guy, so very stereotypical and instantly annoying, and I don't even know who the grunting gun-wielding chick who had 2 lines is.

BUT Linda Hunt is now on it, so there's hope.
